Even as Guwahati is slowly transforming into a modern urban settlement, there is a section of people who still reside in some of the most inhuman conditions in the world. They live in the slums because they are ‘ultra poor’.
The slums are important for the city dwellers because a large section of the poor working class, who clean the roads and are into all sorts of blue-collar jobs, stay there.
The slums are the areas of Guwahati that we can never be proud of because these dirty residential areas are unfit for human habitation by reasons of dilapidation, overcrowding, and lack of ventilation and sanitation facilities.
