Residential societies have received 100 per cent subsidy on OWCs from the civic body.

Owners of several small residential societies in the city have installed organic waste converters in their premises to recycle waste at source.

This comes soon after installation of large organic waste converters (OWCs) by Surat Municipal Corporation at vegetable markets, grain markets and fruit markets.

Residential societies have received 100 per cent subsidy on OWCs from the civic body.

Around 15 lakh households in the city generate nearly 1,800 metric tonne of waste daily, of which 950 MT is organic waste.

If even 60 per cent of organic waste is reprocessed at source, the problem of waste disposal will be over to a large extent. At present, just 36 MT of organic waste is processed at source in the city.

SMC launched a scheme two years ago to give 100 per cent subsidy on OWC for residential societies built on less than 5,000 square metres of land.

Initially, there was reluctance on the part of housing societies for residents thought OWC would create foul smell and be a headache to run it.
